Seeking Visiting Comics Instructor for the 2013/14 IPRC Certificate Program

2012 Comics Program

Now entering its fifth year, the IPRC’s Comics/Graphic Novel track is one of the only comprehensive programs of its kind on the West Coast.

Coursework takes place over three semesters, with an emphasis on empowering students to develop skills and tools, broaden their sources of influence and inspiration, and DIY publishing. Through intensive peer workshops and contact with instructors, students are encouraged to take artistic risks and develop their own unique voice and style, with the goal of producing a print run of their own comic.

The IPRC is seeking an experienced cartoonist/graphic novelist to teach the first seven weeks of the 2013/2014 Comics program, beginning in mid-September 2013. The class will consist of 10-12 apprentice cartoonists who have been accepted on the basis of their portfolios.

Duties include:
• Teach for three hours one evening a week for seven weeks.
• Inspire students to take creative risks.
• Facilitate in-class exercises and critiques.
• Provide lesson plans that cover the basics of cartooning such as lettering, text & image relationships, brushes & washes, and other techniques and ideas.
• Expose students to a variety of different approaches to the art of comics.
• Encourage and guide the students toward their final projects.
• Participation in Comics Program Staff Meetings and various events.

Minimum qualifications:
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Proven teaching experience in the comics genre
• Proven ability to connect with and inspire students
• Strong publishing record

Preferred qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree, MFA, or equivalent

Benefits/Compensation:
• $1,150
• A year-long membership to the IPRC
• $100 in copy credits
• Full access to the IPRC facilities
