The Beats’ coming out party–Gallery Six 60th anniversary

October 7, 1955, Kenneth Rexroth hosted a reading at San Francisco’s Gallery Six of five younger, unknown poets—Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Philip Whalen and Philip Lamantia. This the Beat Poets were launched. The night featured the premier of Ginsberg’s Howl, and Jack Kerouac collecting money at the door for jugs of wine. October 7, 2015 we’ll be celebrating the 60th anniversary of that event, not as a reproduction but a continuation. Each of the six poets, including Lindsay Hill, Jen Coleman, Sam Lohmann and Christopher Luna, will read some work of the original participant as well as their own. The evening will close with a choral reading by all six of Howl.
