Raiders of the Lost Archives

Raiders of the Lost Archives 2014

Saturday, March 22nd 10AM to Sunday, March 23rd 10AM

Play Indiana Jones and librarian for a day by competing at the second annual Raiders of the Lost Archives. Forget Hood to Coast, the Portland Marathon, all those exercises in physical endurance – this competition requires no physical conditioning, and you can do it on pizza and coffee (provided). It’s 24 hours of zine library madness.

Competitors will scour boxes of uncounted zines stashed in the IPRC vaults. This is modern archaeology in the world of zines. Raiders will unearth issues that may have never been looked at since their doting editor last pulled them from the press — a year?  Five years? Fifty years ago?

For 24 hours straight, we’ll read, catalog, eat delicious food, drink coffee and be part of building the world’s largest collection of zines and small press comics. With over 20,000 uncatalogued zines dating back to the 1950s, you’re sure to find a treasure.

The work is not difficult. Knowledge of the alphabet is helpful. Hands-on training in cataloguing will be provided. All it takes is you. Of course, you can come do it solo but a team will provide support in those times of alphabetical need.

Hardcore Raiders will read for 24 hours, while lighter Spelunkers can simply stop in for a few hours of reading.

This year, we’ve got trophies and fun prizes for these categories:

  • Most Zines Cataloged (individual and team)
  • Most Pages Cataloged (individual and team)
  • Best Team Uniform/Costume (remember you should be comfortable for lots of reading!)
  • Best Team Name
  • Best Original Tag
  • Best Catalog Description
  • Most Donations Raised (individual and team)

Registration includes your Raider of the Lost Archives merit badge, enough coffee, pizza, snacks, and beer to fuel you for 24 hours of cataloguing fun, entry into our fabulous raffle AND our special sunrise dance party as we catalog our 1,000th zine. $3 Suggested donation (no one turned away)
