Poetry, Pleasure, & Power: Tuning into Your Voice & Breath

September 22, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

What would a poem look and sound like if it were shaped by the wisdom of your body, by the everyday instruments of your lungs, lips, teeth, tongue, and throat? In this session, we’ll practice tuning into our bodies to notice how we can use our unique voices and breath patterns to deepen our relationship with language and poetry. In particular, we’ll experiment with rituals that can help us identify sounds, words, and phrases that bring sensations of power, pleasure, and playfulness to our bodies, as well as techniques for turning those elements of language into poetry.

The session is open to both beginners and experienced writers–anyone with curiosity about poetry or journaling is welcome.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own notebook and writing utensils. Extra paper, pens and pencils will be supplied if needed.

Optional: You are invited to bring a few personal objects to the session to help create a supportive space for your writing. These might include stones, photos, candles, keepsakes, or any other belongings that help you feel connected to your intuition, power, or playfulness.

Masks are required during the workshop while in the studio. Participants who would like to experiment with breath and voice techniques with their masks off will have space to do so just outside the studio.
