Workshop Description:

Wreaths have been a culturally-significant symbol for thousands of years, primarily throughout the European continent and the British Isles. Depending on who was making them & when, their makers would assign different meanings to them. Wreaths throughout history have symbolized victory, wisdom, and everlasting life, as well as blessings for a family or on a season’s harvest. In any case, it’s clear: wreaths can act as meaningful symbols to remind us of our values and what we want to bring into the world.

In this workshop, we’ll talk about the historical lineages of wreath making, and how the wreaths we make can bring meaning to our worlds. Alex will demonstrate a step-by-step process of how to design and create a wreath. Then it’s your turn! There will be ample time for each participant to design and create their own wreath. Expect to end class with a beautiful wreath, a little wreath zine, and the knowledge to create another one in the future. This class welcomes people of any skill level to join, ages 16+. There will be a few spots open for participants to bring younger family members to make a wreath with them. To inquire about capacity reach out to info@iprc.org

Alex Hale of Solstice Flower Works will provide dried flowers and foliage that they grew on their farm, wreath frames from foraged willow, and all other useful supplies. This will be their second wreath making workshop at the IPRC.

Instructor Bio: Alex Hale (she/her) is a farmer, artist, and educator. Solstice Flower Works is her latest project, a no-till flower farm in the Sandy River watershed. She specializes in growing dried flowers and providing a summertime fresh flower CSA to her community in the Portland area. She’s passionate about accessibility and strives to provide flowers for her artist and activist community in Portland.
