Letterpress Fundamentals: 6 Week Intensive

This comprehensive class covers the fundamentals of letterpress printing in IPRC’s friendly and affordable studio. Through hands on experience, we will explore the basic principles of typography and the history of the craft of printing. Students will receive in-depth training in typesetting and printing, as well as alternative image making techniques. Techniques explored in the course include advanced typesetting, linoleum block printing, pressure printing, two color registration, and printing with photopolymer plates.
Students will gain access to IPRC’s collection of over 150 fonts of lead and wood type, and may print with studio equipment during Open Studio Hours. Technical training in file preparation to create plates from digital imagery will also be provided. This course is designed to be an in-depth exploration of letterpress printing, and students will be given the opportunity to focus on areas of interest.
All levels of experience are welcome! Students who have completed the Intro to Letterpress 1 Day or 2 Day workshop will gain advanced skills and experience in this course. This class is a great fit for students looking to create a range of letterpress prints, who have a particular project they wish to complete within the course, such as:
- Business cards
- Broadsides
- Chapbook Covers
- Greeting cards
- Invitations
- Protest posters
The IPRC Letterpress Studio is the only community studio in Portland – and members have continued, affordable access to printing after completing an Introductory Course. Members may continue to print in our Studio for only $5.00 per printing session! Our instructors are professional artists working in the printing field and offer years of experience and artistic insight.
