streetopia

Join the IPRC for the book release of Streetopia, recently published by Booklyn and edited by Erick Lyle.

Streetopia is based on an exhibition of the same name curated with Chris Johanson in San Francisco. The show was a massive anti-gentrification art fair that brought together 100+ artists, writers, activists with residents of SF’s Tenderloin to consider utopian aspiration for the city and to organize opposition to official city plans to redevelop the neighborhood — the city’s last low-income area — into a “dot com corridor”. The show featured five weeks of free daily talks/skillshares/performances as well as a Free Cafe run by residents out of a gallery that served two free meals a day for five weeks. The book considers the effectiveness of the show’s projects while placing Streetopia in the context of SF’s hypergentrification and global urbanization. Contributors include Rebecca Solnit, Chris Kraus, Sarah Schulman, many more.
