Family Zine Workshop

September 30, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Does your family like to re-tell the same story over and over about “that one time”? Is there someone in your family who has lived a fascinating life and you want to help them record their stories? Does your Grandma or Grandpa have a lot of funny sayings and/or beloved recipes that you want to remember? In this 2-hour FREE workshop, participants are invited to create a zine (self-published booklet) to preserve a family story, anecdote, legend, photo collection, etc. in an easily reproducible and sharable way.

Family stories and knowledge are often overlooked family heirlooms that can disappear in time if they are not passed down and shared. Preserve the voices and experiences of your own family or your ancestors by “canning” your favorite stories in a zine. Work on a surprise gift to give to your family or bring your family along to collaborate with you on creating these new family heirloom zines. Bring a favorite story, family recipes, photos, letters, audio recordings, newspaper articles, or anything else you’d like to use as inspiration or content for your zine. Never made a zine before? No problem! Support will be provided.

All b+w photocopy expenses and materials to make the zines during this two hour workshop will be available and are included in the workshop free of charge. Donations to the IPRC always welcome and greatly appreciated. This workshop will be led by Lori Damiano, a local artist and educator who is currently working on a graphic family memoir about her family’s immigrant and farming history. This event is made possible by the generous support of the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
