Comics & Social (R)evolution Part 2: Cartoons & Other Post-Racial Provocations

In this hands-on workshop, students will explore social justice and equity related themes through the creative lens of comics. Drawing on topical and historical events, participants will craft short graphic narratives that critically examine both current and speculative representations of social issues.

Mr. Lin Lucas is the notorious author of radical picture narratives, screenplays, and unpublished poems. An explorer of the world, he is known to have a secret “Hovel of Solitude” somewhere in the city of Portland, where he is chiefly known for his subversive efforts to undermine the educational status quo through the arcane use of visual arts, creative movement, and storytelling.

The Comics & Social (R)evolution comics series is part of BrownHall’s residency at the IPRC in Spring 2016. BCC: BrownHall is a Creative Collective of Black Artists in the Portland, OR area who are working to promote, build, sustain, and support a strong community based in creativity, love, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and getting shit done. In Spring of 2016 BCC: BrownHall (Black Creative Collective) will partner with the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) and community partners to develop a cultural renaissance initiative that celebrates Black art, Black voice, as well as Black contemporary art, material culture, and traditions within the city of Portland. This project focuses on the impact Black artists and cultural workers can have on the print and material culture of Portland. To encourage and promote stewardship in Black cultural narrative, space, and representation, this project will support the self-publishing of Black artists working in several mediums and through many tiers of development in forms that include comics, lyric booklets, essays, poetry, printed ephemera and events. As such, the BCC:BrownHall and IPRC partnership provides opportunities for Black artists to facilitate workshops, curate, showcase and celebrate their work in self-publishing projects.
