For hundreds of years scientists and philosophers have attempted to organize the world around them by collecting and cataloging images, objects, relics, and natural wildlife. This process is a way of understanding the world. Artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Joseph Cornell adopted this method to create works of art that interpreted the world around them and communicated their own ideas about nature and culture.
This workshop will explore the idea of collection within art history from the Renaissance to contemporary artists such as Mark Dion and Walton Ford. Students will learn to make a hand-bound notebook that will be used for collection and study during a walking field trip. The materials, drawings and written reflections will then be used as source material to create journals relating the process and a personal view of the urban and natural world.
