Print Camp

October 2, 2010 from October 3, 2010 from

Welcome to Print Camp 2010! This is a weekend long intensive covering the beautiful print and binding methods we have here at the IPRC.

Day One Morning: Relief Printing

Day One: Intro to Letterpress
Learn to set movable lead type and print on a table-top hand press in the IPRC print shop. You’ll learn the vocabulary of printing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historical process. Leave the class with a printed card and the satisfaction that comes with using 100-year-old equipment! Successful completion of this one-day class allows IPRC members access to open studio print hours so you can keep on printing!

Day Two Morning: Bindfast Five Perfect Binding
The Bind-Fast 5 is the IPRC’s exciting new bookbinding machine. Using the Bind-Fast 5, you can bind as many as 50 softcover books or zines per hour. Completion of this workshop authorizes IPRC members to use the Bind-Fast during supervised binding hours, so you can take your publishing projects to the next level.

Day Two Afternoon: DIY Screen Print
In part one of this class, the focus will be on making reusable, good quality screens used for making paper or textile prints. The screens made in this class are 10″x12″ which are a perfect size for zine and book covers! Supplies include, stretcher bars, professional quality mesh, degreaser, duct tape and staple guns.

In the second part of the day, the focus will be on printing a hand cut stencil image using the screen that was just built in the previous workshop. Stencils will be made using sticker paper and exacto knives and will be printed through the screen. You will need to bring a high contrast B&W image (no larger than 8×10) in which to make a stencil from as well as your own materials to print on, either paper or fabric. Ink will be provided.
